Frequently Asked Questions

What is hand therapy?

Hand therapy focuses on the assessment and rehabilitation of injuries and conditions affecting the fingers, thumb, hand, wrist, forearm and elbow.

Treatment aims to reduce symptoms, restore movement, strength and function, and support recovery following injury, surgery or other upper limb conditions.

Depending on your needs, treatment may include exercises, custom splinting, wound and scar management, swelling management, hands-on therapy and education.

Do I need a referral?

No. Private patients can book directly without a referral from their GP or specialist.

Referrals are required for certain funding arrangements, including Medicare Chronic Condition Management Plans, DVA and ADF services. WorkCover patients may also require appropriate claim details and treatment approval.

If you have a referral, please bring it along or forward it before your appointment.

How do I book an appointment?

Appointments can be booked directly through our online booking system.

Simply select your appointment type and a suitable time. New patients will receive a digital intake form to complete before attending.

If you're unsure which appointment to select, please contact us for assistance.

Which appointment should I book?

If you're attending Hand Therapy Collective for the first time, please select an Initial Consultation (60 minutes).

If you're returning for ongoing treatment, select a Follow-up Consultation (30 minutes).

An Extended Consultation (45 minutes) may be appropriate for returning patients with more complex injuries or treatment requiring additional time.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Where available, please bring:

  • Any GP or specialist referral letters

  • Relevant imaging reports (X-ray, CT, MRI or ultrasound)

  • Hospital discharge summaries or surgical reports

  • Any splints, braces or supports you're currently using

  • Relevant Medicare, DVA, WorkCover or ADF funding details

Please complete your digital intake form before your appointment. You can upload relevant documents directly through the form, so there's no need to bring additional copies if you've already submitted them.

What happens during my first appointment?

Your initial consultation involves discussing your injury or condition, reviewing your medical history and completing an assessment of your upper limb.

Your therapist will explain the findings, discuss your rehabilitation goals and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

Treatment may begin during your first appointment, including exercises, education, wound care or custom splinting where appropriate.

Do you make custom splints?

Yes. We provide custom thermoplastic splinting for a range of upper limb injuries and conditions.

Splints may help protect healing structures, support joints, improve positioning or assist recovery following surgery.

Casting and prefabricated supports may also be provided where clinically appropriate. Additional material costs may apply.

Can I attend after surgery?

Absolutely. Post-operative rehabilitation is a key clinical focus at Hand Therapy Collective.

Treatment may involve protection and immobilisation, wound and scar management, swelling reduction, restoring movement and progressive strengthening.

Where appropriate, rehabilitation is guided by your surgeon's recommendations and any specific post-operative precautions.

Can I claim through Medicare or private health insurance?

Eligible patients may be entitled to Medicare rebates under a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan or occupational therapy benefits through their private health insurance extras cover.

We also accept eligible referrals under WorkCover Queensland, DVA and Bupa ADF Health Services.

Eligibility, rebates and funding arrangements vary. Please visit our Fees & Funding page for further information.

How many appointments will I need?

This depends on your condition, the severity of your injury and your individual rehabilitation goals.

Some conditions may only require a small number of appointments, while fractures, surgical repairs and more complex injuries may require ongoing treatment.

Your expected rehabilitation needs will be discussed following your initial assessment and reviewed as treatment progresses.
